Why is my child's bus late?
We strive to maintain our routes and schedules daily. However, delays may occur due to:
- Weather or traffic conditions
- Driver absences
- Mechanical issues
When this happens, routes may be doubled or run as a second load to ensure students still receive transportation.
Why can't the bus come further into my subdivision?
School buses range from 30 to 40 feet long and are not designed to safely navigate narrow roads, tight turns, or cul-de-sacs—especially where visibility is limited or where cars, equipment, or toys may be parked along the street.
Additionally, most neighborhood roads are built with lower-rated asphalt that is not designed to withstand the repeated weight of large vehicles like school buses. Over time, regular bus traffic can cause significant wear and tear, leading to costly damage.
Safety is our top priority. Routes are designed to balance convenience with safe navigation, time constraints, and roadway conditions.
Why does my child have a seat assignment?
Seat assignments help promote a safe and predictable ride. They:
- Support positive behavior management
- Help the driver learn student names
- Ensure consistency during contact tracing, if needed
How are bus stops determined?
Bus stop locations are determined by SCCS Transportation staff using:
- Student data from Infinite Campus
- Georgia law and transportation software
- Road safety, traffic flow, and neighborhood design
By state guidelines, students may be expected to walk up to 0.25 miles to a designated stop. Parents or guardians are expected to provide appropriate supervision at the stop.
What if I have a concern regarding my child’s bus driver?
Any questions or concerns should be directed to our Transportation Supervisor, Megan Chastain, at 770-464-4850.
State law prohibits interfering with a moving school bus or delaying its schedule. Drivers are instructed not to hold conversations with parents/guardians at bus stops.
We’ve never used the bus before - how do we sign up?
Visit the SCCS website and complete the Transportation Change Form. After submitting the form, contact the transportation department at 770-464-4850.
Please allow up to three school days for new requests to be processed and a stop to be added.
We’re taking a break from riding the bus. What should we do?
Please notify the Transportation Department in advance. If a student does not ride for three consecutive days without notice, the bus will stop servicing that stop until communication is received.
Can my child ride a bus to another child’s home after school?
Unfortunately, students may only ride the bus to which they are assigned. Our routes are planned carefully with safety and capacity in mind.
Only in true emergencies may a student ride a different bus, with prior approval.
Steps:
- Submit a Transportation Change Form.
- Await approval from the Transportation Supervisor.
- If approved, your child will receive a temporary bus pass from the school office.
Notes sent by hand, Dojo messages, or emails to teachers will not be accepted.
We are moving. What should we do?
Contact your child’s school first to update your address. The school will notify the Transportation Department, and, if eligible, a new bus stop will be assigned.
Bus drivers may not transport a student from a new address without authorization from the school or transportation office.
Why did you suspend my child from riding the bus?
The school bus is an extension of the classroom and must remain a safe environment for all riders. Disruptive behavior poses a serious risk due to the mobile nature of the bus, traffic distractions, and vehicle size.
All SCCS buses display posted Rules & Expectations. When those rules are violated:
- A referral is submitted by the driver.
- School administrators review the report, contact the family, and assign consequences.
- Video camera footage is reviewed when needed.
Our goal is always to protect the safety and well-being of all students and staff on board.
